DIY // HOW TO MAKE A SCRUNCHIE

I've seen a massive influx of 90's scrunchies this spring/summer and I really wanted some, but seeing as I haven't had any time or money to go out and buy some, I thought I would make some myself and show you guys how to at the same time, so here goes:

You will need: scissors, tape measure or ruler, elastic, safety pin, pen or chalk and a needle and thread (or a sewing machine).

You will also need some fabric of your choice, any type of fabric should work with this.

Firstly, you need to meaure out a piece of material 90cm by 20cm (you can adjust this to the size you want as this is quite a large scrunchie)and cut it out.

Next you need to fold the material in half lengthways so that the right sides (the sides with the pattern on) are facing each other.

Sew along the open edge with any stitch, you can hand sew it or use a sewing machine to save time. It doesn't matter what colour thread you use as you won't see it when it's finished.

Cut a piece of elastic the length of an average hair band and turn your now sewn tube of material the right way out. Thread your elastic through the material, making sure not to let go. You can attach the elastic to a safety pin to help thread it through if you find that easier.

Use a needle and thread to sew the two ends of the elastic together to make a hairband, then sew up the left over open edges of the scrunchie.

 AND THAT'S IT!!

here's some suggestions of how to wear your scrunchies! and don't forget, you can adjust the measurements to make a different sized scrunchie if you prefer!

001 // so I hope everyone had a great easter holiday and I'm sorry the posts have been a little few and far between but I thought I'd switch things up with a little DIY. I've been really stressed lately with exams coming up but I will try and get a few posts in.

tag me (@mialayzell) in pictures of you wearing your handmade scrunchies on instagram or twitter and I'll give you a shoutout! Enjoy!! xx

3 WAYS TO WEAR...

Pair your dungarees with a baggy floral blouse and vintage accessories for a boho look, maybe add a floral headband or a single flower to a ponytail or plait.

Wear a plain or graphic tee with your dungarees to get this urban look, try adding small things like a gold chain, hoop earrings or simply turn up your sleeves or shorts to add a little something to your look.

Try layering this look with grungey prints and textures, I've gone with a red checked shirt and a leather waistcoat, you could try a studded jumper or a black crop top. Try adding accessories, maybe a neck cuff/collar and rings to give your outfit oomph.

001 // Thought I would share some ways in which I wear my dungarees, I think they will be a big trend this spring/summer and many shops are already stocking them! I reccomend Topshop's however mine are vintage DIYs and I prefer them by far!

002 // Hope everyone is having a great weekend and if it's snowing near you like it is here, I feel for you :( I'm frozen to the bone brrrrr.

003 // and lastly I would just like to ask if you would do me a huge favour! Please nominate me for Company's Best Teen Fashion Blog! It would be such an honor to even be nominated and I've already had such great support from you guys I just know you will do me proud ;)

So here's 11 facts about me:
1 // I go to an all girls high school

3 // I am obsessed with Alt J
4 // I am the worlds worst person at saving up money
5 // I want to go to the London College of Fashion

1. Do you have any unusual quirks, if so what are they?
I eat weird foods together like chocolate and chips or crisps
       with yoghurt...
2. Where did you last travel abroad and what was the best experience you had there?
The last place I went abroad was to Spain to see my auntie and
uncle and the best experience would have to be the funniest 60's
fancy dress new years party I have ever been to!

3. What situation do you see yourself in 10 years time?
In 10 years time I have no idea where I see myself, but I would
like to see myself working either
with a fashion magazine or maybe even running my own brand/shop.

4. Which shop is the majority of your wardrobe from?
The majority of my wardrobe is probably from Topshop or various
    vintage/charity shops.

5. Trousers or skirts? And why?
I would have to say skirts as I really hate my thighs and skirts
cover them and they tend to suit my shape better anyway.

6. What is your favourite beauty product?
My favourite beauty product at the moment has to be either the
No. 7 Stay Perfect foundation or the Maybelline Super Stay 10
Hour Tint Gloss in Lasting Pink.

7. If your wardrobe could only be from one shop, money no limits, what shop would it be?
I would have to say Topshop because they have such amazing
unique things yet they have the basics too.
8. What did job did you want to do as a child?

As a child I think I wanted to be a shop owner or an artist, and
for a while I wanted to be a midwife like my mum... until I
found out exactly what that entailed...
9. Why did you start blogging?

I started blogging a year ago on my other blog because I wanted
to share my outfits and my style and since I started my new
blog I think I am going to focus more on sharing my developing
style and interest in fashion and hopefully my blog will grow as
it gets older and help me get a little more known in the world
    of fashion!
10. What would you describe your style as?
I would describe my style as a mixture of grunge, vintage and
    sometimes just plain weird hahaa
11. What is your favourite season?

My favourite seasons have got to be spring or summer as I love
the different trends that come around that time and how
versatile they are! And doesn't love a bit of sun?!

7 // One weird thing about you?

001 // hey guys! how has your weekend been? i've had quite a good one, despite the stupid amount of homework. I made it into town today and managed to buy a few things (the topshop dresses and socks and the office boots) and all the other items are things i bought not so recently or just felt like showing you guys hahaa.

002 // i really love these new topshop dresses as i think they will look good for the rest of the winter and in the spring too as the purple dress is a lot more purple in person and i think it will look really cute! i also wanted an orange and yellow version as i am really loving the kind of neon pop trends coming in this spring, but they didnt have the yellow version in store and the orange version was a size 12 and didn't really suit my colouring :( the striped one will look amazing for the monochrome trend and the gorgeous cut out back will be lovely for the warmer weather... if it ever gets here.

003 // my wishlist is constantly growing but everything i want either isnt out yet or i have to order online, but the thing is... i have no money :( the perks of being a teenager hey? anyway, i'm going to be saving up, to quench my thirst for clothes and also to fuel my addiction of dressmaking and craft, i have so many ideas for things to make and possibly sell - look out for these in the future ;) - but i never have any money to buy supplies! i might have to improvise :s

004 // anyway, im going to stop waffling on now and be sure to expect an outfit post and a diy post very soon, i am definitely getting into the swing of posting a bit more regularly than the last blog hahaa.

INSPIRATION

 random tumblr images

stills from Pulp Fiction - 1994

stills from Girl, Interrupted - 1999

stills from Pretty Woman - 1990

more random tumblr images

stills from The Virgin Suicides - 1999

001 // Hey guyss, I've been trying to find inspiration for some new ideas that are coming up and I thought I would show you how I went about it! I tend to just scroll through tumblr, instagram or google images hoping to find some pictures that spark imagination and I'm normally quite successful, I just love compiling them together and seeing what a beautiful mess they make in the end.

002 // These are just a few pieces of inspiration - tumblr really helps me as you can find a real variety of creative and meaningful pictures there and I think films help a lot too. I chose just a few of my favourite films to show like Girl, Interrupted and The Virgin Suicides which I absolutely adore and I think are so powerful, as books too. I read them both religiously every summer. There's just something about the 90's that makes me wish I was old enough to appreciate them at the time.

003 // I find getting inspirational images to help you with your own projects really useful and I don't go a day without looking through various screenshots and saved pictures to come up with new ideas. I really recommend trying it if you haven't already, just google something random and you'll soon be well on your way.

004 // In other news, I have eventually come out the other end of a 2 week mock exam period and my results seem to be going surprisingly well so far! Let's hope there's a reward coming my way in the near future ;) I'll be posting a bit more regularly now but don't expect many outfit posts during the week as I tend to go from school uniform to lounge pants to pjs... but don't worry, I won't bail on you.

OOTD // I'VE GOT SOUL BUT I'M NOT A SOLDIER

beanie - present // crop top - DIY // skirt - handmade // leather waistcoat - vintage // army jacket - vintage // Doc Martens - eBay

001 // Just a quick little outfit post for this weekend, I wore this to a casual dinner out with the family and got a few weird looks... the locals obviously aren't into the military trend like I am!

002 // I cropped a long sleeved black t-shirt to make this crop top and made this skirt myself a few years ago. The waistcoat and jacket were both presents from fellow vintage lovers and friends of mine for my last birthday... oh how I've trained them well ;) i bought my Doc Martens from a boutique on eBay for £60 which I personally think is a good saving for DM's!

003 // And finally I thought I would show off my new babies! My prescription Gok Wan glasses!! I got them on 2 for one the other day at the opticians and I just can't take them off! They make me feel fairly quirky and they have a certain Deirdre Barlow feel to them AND I LOVE THEM! Oh and sorry for the floral headband, I was playing around with photoshop...

004 // I have mock exams for the next 2 weeks so posts may be a bit scarce but I will try and keep on top on things. I promise to stick to this new blog :)

FIRST IKKLE POST

So seeing as it is a new year, well I know its the middle of February but you know what I mean, I thought it would be a good time to have a fresh start at this whole fashion blogging thing.

I just wasn't happy with my old blog and I'm a strong believer in changing the things you are unhappy with. My old blog was www.daisiesandukuleles.blogspot.com by the way.

I'm hoping to post at least 3 times a month but with school, art and exams coming I just can't promise ;) This will mainly be a fashion blog as I think it will be a good experience for me to express my fashion interests and to hear what other people have to say, but there may be the odd little art post as they are my main passions in life!

I am currently in year 10 of high school in the UK and hope to go on to study fashion, design or something of that sort in the future. My dream school is the London College of Fashion and I hope to move to London to study there in a few years.

Would love to make a few fashion friendies so comments and schtuff are appreciated and I would love to see your blogs!

Well it has been lovely speaking but I have to be off now, I'll be sure to post again soon!

Mia x

p.s. i will follow you back on here, twitter, tumblr, anything :p
